Snopes.com - Investigating Urban Myths & Legends
A very interesting site we came across, quite some time ago, is www.snopes.com
This site investigates and provides evidence to either prove or disprove popular rumours or legends that many of us have heard. You could spend hours browsing through this site, and will undoubtedly come across some evidence contrary to what you have believed throughout your life on a particular subject.
Have a look at these few selected examples:
This example shows how many reported facts about one of the current US presidential candidates are simply not true.
This example shows how an initial mistake made by Dr Pepper a while back has been twisted in such a way that it could actually hurt the sales of Pepsi or even Coca-Cola
Chewing gum takes 7 years to digest
An old wives tale that it takes 7 years for chewing gum to pass through our digestive system is shown to be completely false
John Jacob Astor and his quote onboard the Titanic
A multi-millionaire and probably the most illustrious person onboard the Titanic, Mr Astor is deemed to have made a famous quotation about ice when the ship hit an iceberg
Son of a Gun - Woman impregnated by a bullet carrying sperm
This final example has to be one of my favourites. It purports to be the origin of the phrase ’son of a gun’. A lengthy discussion tells us the truth of the matter, which is…….well I am not going to spoil it
